AFI-20306 Aquaculture and Fisheries

The course gives an overview of the aquatic environment as a natural resource. Fish and other seafood is an important component of the human food package. Its supply is secured through exploitation of the aquatic environment, either by extraction (capture fisheries) or by farming (aquaculture). This course gives an overview of the different forms and management opportunities of aquatic production. It gives an introduction in different methods to influence the production capacity of the animal (at organism and population level) and the possibilities and limits set by the aquatic environment to this capacity. The course has a thematic structure, whereby each week is dedicated to another important theme, such as, fisheries, fish culture, shellfish farming and the carrying capacity of coastal zones, growth, reproduction and welfare of fish, fish as element in water management, aquariology etcetera.




YAS-80312 BSc-project Animal Science & Aquaculture

The BSc-project comprises of 2 parts: an integral part of 3 credits and a thesis of 9 credits. The integral part comprises:
- classroom lectures with a training in the discussion of relevant topics in animal husbandry;
- excursion abroad;
- instruction in the use of the library is optional.
The thesis part comprises a research project in the broad field of animal husbandry (literature study, data elaboration or experimental work) including the design of the study. The project is initially proposed by the student or chair group, submitted to the coordinator and supervised by a chair group according to the project. The thesis aims at the format of a scientific publication: introduction and problem, literature study, material and methods (if applicable), results and conclusions.
