Most research is conducted as PhD projects with PhDs embedded in the Graduate School WIAS. Research of the Aquaculture and Fisheries Group focuses on the development of sustainable management practices for both fisheries and aquaculture. Research is organized according three levels of integration:
|
Organism level
Production system level
Populations and aquatic ecosystems level |
|
Studies at the Organism level aim at understanding the adaptive capacity of fish (and shrimp) under various environmental conditions, by studying the interplay between genetic predisposition, feeds, and water quality on one hand and the physiological/endocrine regulation of reproduction, health and growth of fishes on the other hand.
Studies at the Production systems level concentrate on understanding how fishes affect their environment, by investigating nutrient balances in aquatic production systems, and by designing sustainable integrated farming systems for fish and shrimp.
Research at the Population level concentrates on the dynamics of fish populations in natural ecosystems, by analysing the complex interactions between various fish species and their individual habitat requirements. |

The Aquaculture and Fisheries Group participates in the Animal Sciences Group of Wageningen UR ; the organisation for intensive collaboration between science, application and practice. The Animal Sciences Group links practical problems with fundamental issues for science.
Institute for Marine Resources & Ecosystem Studies (IMARES) is a leading, independent research institute that concentrates on research into strategic and applied marine ecology. Products and services are field research, experiments on a real-life scale, exploratory studies on a laboratory scale, data management and modelling. The research facilities are modern, and the institute also has ISO 9001 certification.
The European Commission is an important commissioner for AFI research, since the group participates in various EU funded networks, and was recently successful within the FP6 . Also locally, in the graduate school WIAS , FCF acquired/is involved in strategic funds (A&F) projects. |
<>The Aquaculture and Fisheries Group is also very active in development projects. It co-ordinates one of the WU-priority international ´ INREF ´ projects (together with the World Fish Centre ); it participates in three projects of the Dutch governmental University co-operation programme for institutional building ( MHO-Nuffic ) and it participates in several European funded international co-operation ( INCO ) projects.
